Job Description

Thermal Project Engineer specializes in Thermal Management for lithium-Ion Batteries and is passionate about renewable energy. In this position you will be heavily involved with BESS projects from design to execution. You have the critical responsibility of supporting the planning, designing, and execution of multiple energy storage projects. This involves exploration of subject areas focused on thermal management, definition of scope, engineering oversight and consulting across cross functional teams to deliver a best-in-class product.

Employees in this role are strong problem solvers, blending creative and analytical skills to solve complex integration of batteries of differing technologies to existing sites. Successful candidates will have acute attention to detail with proven abilities to identify and apply lessons learned, implement process countermeasures, create tools and standardize work practices to maximize the performance and functionality of battery energy storage systems. You will utilize data from various internal and external sources to perform technical due diligence and propose storage & hybrid solutions to support our customers’ evolving needs. As a support function, you will work collaboratively across the organization to support design, construction and commissioning.

The selected candidate for this role:

  • Evaluates design aspects of major components for large scale energy storage projects
  • Prepares technical scopes of work for incorporation into contract documents that focus on studies or designs of the thermal management systems
  • Supports projects from conception through execution, working closely with early-stage and construction project managers including commissioning and supporting on-site commissioning activities of the thermal management system
  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work, including close collaboration with and oversight of external Engineers of Record
  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas
  • Collaborate with suppliers to successfully integrate major equipment in terms of equipment sizing, compatibility with technology, equipment controls, and commissioning
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplined teams for problem solving, process improvement opportunities, and system integration and controls
  • Identifies value engineering opportunities as well as emerging technologies prospects
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Preferred Work Experience:

 An SME in Thermal Management of common energy storage technologies and/or project management, with established expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    • Hydronic HVAC systems
    • Air Cooled HVAC systems
    • Understanding of energy storage heat generation and dissipation requirements
    • Battery storage system design
  • Experience with the engineering and design of multiple thermal management technologies
    • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
    • Hydronic
    • Air side HVAC
  • Strong knowledge of technologies in energy storage including varying battery chemistries, power conversion units and DC/DC converters
  • Lithium-ion battery storage safety: familiarity with UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, applicable IFC/IBC sections
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively conveying technical and non-technical concepts to diverse audiences

 Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program
  • 5+ years of proven engineering experience
