The Brokdorf Plant has been granted a decommissioning permit to begin dismantling the nuclear power plant. This was the first permit issued by the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature. PreussenElektra applied for the approval in 2017 ultimately shutting down the plant in December or 2021, making it the last German nuclear power plant to receive this approval.
Phase 1 for dismantling and decommissioning has begun, removing components that are no longer useful. Such efforts include decontaminating the primary cooling unit while making sure they are in compliance with authorities. In expectation of fuel rods and fuel elements to be removed and transported to the interim storage facility site, a second dismantling permit must first be approved which is currently being examined by experts.
Guido Knott, CEO of PreussenElektra, stated that he is pleased and plan on being finished with the project by mid 2030s. Ambitious as they are, safety standards are imperative as they continue to dismantle sites. The plant would be considered the largest battery facility in the EU.
