Cabinet moves to reverse Italy’s anti-nuclear stance

Many countries have joined hands to achieve sustainable nuclear energy by 2050. Italy who was once anti-nuclear has reversed their stance. Italy’s Council of Ministers approved a draft law to create the legal framework to reintroduce nuclear power in which was phased out back in 1987.

It was on February 28th when President Giorgio Meloni along with the Minster of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin approved the new delegation on sustainable nuclear energy. We are seeing a lot of countries who once weren’t aligned with these efforts, shift their stance to fit the framework of decarbonisation polices of 2050. Italy once operated 4 nuclear power plants in the 1960s but it was the Chernobyl accident in 1986 that spearheaded the shut down of its last 2 nuclear plants. Fast forward since then, public perception has changed which sparked a motion approved by the Italian Parliament urging to reincorporate nuclear power back into the country.

We are 25 years away from the deadline to reach decarbonisation polices and I believe we will continue to see more governments in other countries join hands in these efforts. The draft law will now be submitted to parliament for final approval.
