NextEra Energy, a Florida based utility, is floating a $15.9 billion bid proposal to South Carolina lawmakers for the purpose of purchasing Santee Cooper.

Santee Cooper is a state-owned utility and after they abandoned the V.C. Summer 2 & 3 Project it resulted in their partner on the project, SCANA, to also abandon the project.  Within a couple of weeks the Governor of South Carolina began shopping for someone willing to purchase Santee Cooper to help recover the cost S.C. residents have paid within their electric bills for the past decade.

NextEra executives have briefed S.C. Senators Larry Grooms (Berkeley County) and Luke Rankin (Horry County) on their plans for a bid to buy Santee Cooper, according to reports in “The State” newspaper.

NextEra plans to brief more lawmakers as it gauges legislators interest in a deal before seeking their approval of the acquisition, said Senator Grooms.

“This is the framework of a potential offer,” said Senator Grooms, whose district includes Santee Cooper’s headquarters in Moncks Corner, SC.
