Vogtle Nuclear Expansion Project Costs Increase by $2.3 Billion

Last week, it was announced that the cost to finish Plant Vogtle’s 2 new reactors has increased by $2.2 billion in the last 8 months.

The actual increase won’t be final until the project’s budget is revised, and it will require that the four owners (Georgia Power Co, Oglethorpe Power Corp, Municipal Electric Authority of GA and Dalton Utilities) vote on whether to continue the project.  According to the latest estimate, the project is now 67% complete.

Georgia Power stated in its financial report that an estimated $1.4 billion increase in the base capital cost primarily resulted from changed assumptions related to finalizing contracts and management responsibilities for Bechtel, which became the prime construction contractor after Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy.
