Southern Company released a video last week showing the roof of the Vogtle Unit 3 shield building being set in place. The shield building roof weighs around 2 million pounds and measures 135 feet in diameter and 37 feet tall.
The shield building is a unique feature of the AP1000 reactor design, that provides an additional layer of safety around the containment vessel and nuclear reactor to protect the structure from any potential impacts.
Southern Company also announced that it completed the first emergency preparedness drill for Vogtle 3&4. The drill included a comprehensive review of the site’s emergency preparedness plans and helped to prepare teams for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) evaluated exercise next year.
