The limitless energy revolution is gaining momentum, with Microsoft inking the first-ever commercial nuclear fusion deal with startup Helion Energy. The deal aims to produce electricity through fusion by 2028, with Helion targeting at least 50 megawatts of power generation for Microsoft after a year or face financial penalties. Microsoft believes that nuclear fusion is just years away from being a viable reality, and Helion Energy is backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Helion’s technology heats fuels to temperatures greater than 100 million degrees Celsius to generate electricity. Co-Founder and CEO of Helion, David Kirtley, has said, “There is no doubt we still have a lot of work to do, but we are confident in our ability to deliver the world’s first fusion power facility…Let’s go build the world’s first fusion power plant!”
