Deadline Extended for RG&E and Ginna Contract

The New York Public Service Commission ordered Ginna’s Plant owners and RG&E to negotiate a new reliability support services agreement on concerns that closure of the nuclear plant would threaten stability of the local electricity grid. The 2 company’s negotiations have been extended from Jan 15th to Feb 6th. Meanwhile, RG&E has proposed an alternative plan that would allow them to nearly double the amount of electricity which would allow Ginna to close without impacting the reliability at question.
Ginna is one of the oldest nuclear power plants still in operation, having started in 1970. It was named after Robert Emmett Ginna, a former chief executive of RG&E, who was one of the nation’s earliest advocates of using nuclear energy to generate electricity.
Additional arguments for Ginna to remain open are that it employs about 700 people and is the biggest property tax payer in Wayne County.
For now Ginna’s fate and its employees are left hanging.
