FirstEnergy Solutions, its subsidiaries and the FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company, or FENOC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its creditors on March 31, 2018 – the weekend before FES faced an April 2nd deadline to make a $100 million debt payment.
In a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, FENOC certified that the companies will begin the shutdowns as early as May 31, 2020. Donald Moul, president of FES and chief nuclear officer, wrote that because of “severe economic challenges” the company “has decided to permanently cease power operations:”
These shutdowns will affect about 2,300 employees.
